Fiber Sprite

December WIPs

12/1/2017

Shuttle, spindle, knitting needles, crochet hook, and scissors. From thefibersprite.
In an effort to get a handle on what it is I'm doing, I thought it'd be useful for me to review my WIPs/fiber pipeline here. Of course, once I took a look at all the WIPs I had going, I thought that maybe I had a little too much going on. But here goes:
A stashbuster wool sweater. From thefibersprite.
Knitting
  • Pictured above is a stashbuster sweater, of my own design. Started early November, and progressing quickly. I have the yoke and then the steek, neckband, and cuffs. Plus all those ends.
  • There's one pair of socks on the needles, but there's no rush there. It's really a knitting project to have in my purse when I have a few moments to fill with mindless knitting.
A bobbin of handspun yarn. From thefibersprite.
Support spindle - spun cashmere, with plying spindle and plying silk. From thefibersprite.
Spinning
  • Above Left: There's still a few ounces of this BFL to spin, and then it's plying. (Which I'm dreading, since it's laceweight and will take forever)
  • Above Right: I've finished spinning some lovely cashmere I picked up last spring at Yarnfest, and now it's on to plying. I deced to spin it in the traditional way as shown in Galina Khmeleva's DVD, Spinning Gossamer Threads: The Yarns of Orenburg. Now it's just on to plying. I'll be using fine silk for plying (far right) and using a traditional plying spindle (center).
  • Not pictured: I like to spin up some of the spinning fiber I've been dying. I'm thinking fractal spun. It should be quick, but I do feel like I ought to finish the other two projects before I dive into another one.

Weaving
  • On the floor loom: A rug that has been sitting stagnant for far too long. I got one color change wrong, and more or less abandoned it. There's at least one more rug worth of warp, but I haven't had the heart to weave it. I'm tempted to cut the warp off the loom to start something else, but it feels like such a waste.
  • On the table loom: Cloth (like above) for a semi-secret project. I managed to make two runs of the cloth in November, and am excited to keep going in December. Yarn is my own hand-dyed yarn (available here).
  • On the rigid heddle loom: washcloths with looped pile, as described in Inventive Weaving on a Little Loom. This one has been sitting untouched for a month or more because it's tedious, but I'd like to get it off the loom before December 14. That's when my rigid heddle group meets, and they know it wasn't finished last month, and I want to have something to show for myself, so...

Dyeing
  • Something new hits the dyepot every day, and I have to say it's pretty fun! Above is the same colorway in both spinning fiber and yarn. Want some for yourself? It's for sale in the shop.
Yes, you CAN sew with handwoven fabric! From thefibersprite.

Sewing
  • A semi-secret project (or several) with the fabrics pictured above, plus any new fabric I get woven this month. Still in the prototyping stage, but I'm having fun with it.
  • I just bought two new sewing machines after my regular machine bit the dust. It wasn't a fancy machine, and I wasn't terribly attached to it, so I decided to let it go. One new machine replaces it, and the other is a serger. I'd like to do some projects getting the hang of the serger, if time allows.
  • I'd love to make some garments too...again, if time allows.

Whew! That's quite a list, but I can promise you I'm not bored! What has been keeping your hands busy these days?
xx,

Pamela
