What's In Your Knitting Bag?

11/3/2016

I'll admit it, I'm a bag lady. While I don't drool over the latest designer purses, I do find myself needing a bag for every occasion. And that especially includes knitting.

Of all the knitting bags I've ever had, the Fringe Field Bag is by far my favorite. I got mine almost as soon as they came out - I remember clicking "buy" as soon as I got the email they were back in stock, and hoping I'd beat out the other frantic knitters who wanted one too. These days, you can get a Fringe Field Bag in more colors, and I hear a larger size might be coming soon.

What I love about the bag is how much I can fit in it - and still fit my knitting projects, too! Because having the right tools on hand is pretty darn important.

So, what's in my bag? Over the years, I've honed it down to the essentials (clockwise from top):
  1. Scissors. These are wonderfully sharp, and excellent for precise cutting.
  2. A row counter. I've used simpler ones before, but this one delights me.
  3. A tape measure. (It's the sheep! The tail pulls out to become the tape measure.) I've seen several versions, but mine is made by Lantern Moon.
  4. Stitch holders. Pictured are these, but I also love these.
  5. A gauge/needle size checker. You usually want to measure gauge over a bigger size than the window that's included in this one, but it's a great multi-tool for any knitter to have.
  6. Needles, yarn, and scribbled notes from my most recent project.
  7. Wonder clips. Perfect for seaming knits together. I used to use safety pins, but I have to say, these are a huge improvement.
  8. Tapestry needles. I love that these come in their own case, which keeps me from losing them.
  9. Stitch markers. I use the coil-less safety pins for almost everything, but sometimes you need contrasting colors for fun or to mark something important. All of them are looped onto a safety pin that gets pinned to the inside of the bag.
  10. Bone crochet hooks. The one on top was found in my grandmother's sewing room. She didn't crochet, so where it came from is a mystery. The second was bought from Fringe Association.
  11. A huge dpn. This is a size 17 double-pointed knitting needle. It comes in handy as a nostepinne on occasion.
  12. A pen, for noting where I left off in patterns, how I modified patterns, and any inspiration that comes to mind.

I've included links to Amazon where I could. If you buy something I do get a tiny commission. I remember a lot of these items being a lot less expensive at my LYS and local craft stores, so be sure to check those out too!
